The way teeth bite together is known as occlusion. When teeth do not bite together correctly, it is known as a malocclusion. Malocclusions should be treated because it can cause a large number of problems such as:
Poor dental hygiene: It is difficult to brush teeth when they are crowded and uneven in the mouth.
Trauma: Teeth that protrude or stick out from the mouth are in great danger of being injured. This can result in chipping, breaking, fracturing or avulsion (when the entire tooth comes out of the mouth).
Stress on the teeth and jaw: Teeth tend to wear more easily if they are positioned in a crossbite or underbite. This may also put pressure on the jaw, leading to problems in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Speech problems: Certain malocclusions may prevent a person from speaking clearly.
